The High School Research Experience at the Boyce Thompson Institute (BTI) provides an excellent opportunity to learn valuable research skills and explore if a scientific career is right for you. Currently, we offer opportunities to students interested in plant genome research, bioinformatics, plant genetics, plant molecular biology, biotechnology, biological engineering, digital agriculture, plant defense, and biochemistry. Our 2023 Research Experience opportunities for High School students are funded by private donors and foundations.
The 2023 summer program is anticipated to begin Tuesday, June 27, 2023 and end Friday, August 11, 2023, lasting six weeks. Selected high school students will be provided a $4,000 stipend over the course of the program.
Please note: We are currently only accepting high school students who are local or regional residents of the Ithaca, NY area year-round, and cannot accept out-of-state students or students who are not year-round residents of the Ithaca, NY area, or students who live outside a reasonable commute to Ithaca, NY (a reasonable commute is considered around an hour). We encourage any out-of-state students or students who are not year-round permanent residents of the Ithaca area to look into our undergraduate REU programs when they are eligible.
While we are currently planning an in-person program in Ithaca, New York, all our programming is tentative on COVID-19 restrictions and is subject to change.
Selected students will be required to be fully vaccinated from COVID-19 before June 27, 2023, or obtain a university-approved medical or religious exemption.
